The Many Layers of Skin

Hold on to your hats girls and boys. To understand how skin care works you need to understand a bit of how skin layers work. Don’t worry! I’ll keep it simple

Basically skin is a protective layer protects structures under the skin safe while also controlling body temperature. It is the biggest organ that you have and never get the credit that it deserves. Skin is made up of two main layers:

Epidermis:

The most superficial (outermost) layer is the epidermis, which consists of a dead layer of skin called the stratum corneum. This layer serves to protect the skin and keep in moisture but we will talk more about that later. The deeper layer of the epidermis is where the living cells are. In this deeper layer cells grow and mature like a conveyor belt. They start from the deepest layer where the stem cells are and mature until they die, finally becoming the most superficial layer. This is also the layer where the melanocytes live and basically they make skin pigment and hand it off to the other skin cells as they grow.

Dermis:

This is the layer underneath the epidermis and supports the epidermis. This is also where sweat and oil glands live. It is split into two layers: a superficial area of mostly protein structures where the epidermis will drop fingerlike projections into called the papillary dermis. The deeper layer of the dermis is the area that has the dense protein structures such as collagen and other proteins that give skin its structure and elasticity. This is the layer where facial wrinkles are found.

Intro done. See, that was not so bad.
